SILVER THREAD WINERY
Owner winemakers Paul and Shannon Brock are part of a new generation of young winemakers who are helping to make the Finger Lakes region famous. Since 2011, the husband-and-wife team has taken Silver Thread to the next level, focusing on expressive, natural wines.
The vineyards are grown in an organic farming system, without chemical fertilizers. Small batch production limits production to 3,000 cases. The turtle on the label is a local Native American artwork, reminding us to care for the land and water that gives us the gift of wine.
Environmental responsibility and sustainability.
Silver Thread is a zero waste company. That means composting, reusing, and recycling everything used to make and sell our wine. Vineyard prunings and grape pomace (residual skins and seeds) are composted and spread on the vineyard soil. All yeast remaining after fermentation is sown in the vineyard. The packaging (bottles, taps, and cardboard boxes) is 100% recycled. The Brocks continue to pursue a cultivation system that maximizes yield utilizing different methods. Silver Thread continues to produce expressive, mature wines in harmony with nature.
In 2015, we installed a 28kW solar power system which has exceeded our expectations and is producing more than 100% of the power we need. In the summer, we sell surplus power, and in the winter, we generate our own power.
Because the weight of glass bottles increases production costs and fuel costs for transportation, Silver Thread Wines bottles in eco-friendly glass bottles that are 30% lighter than the industry average. We use glass made in the United States to reduce carbon emissions from transportation.
Our approach is to use nothing other than natural fermentation. We're devoted to making the vineyard the best it can be and letting the wine speak for itself. Because our grapes are never altered after harvest, the amount of sweetness, acidity, tannins, color, etc. in the finished wine are always a natural and pure representation of the vineyard.
Our philosophy.
At Silver Thread, we aim to ,maintain and improve the already outstanding reputation of the Finger Lakes region by making wines that take into consideration the terroir - that is, the grape-growing and winemaking environment that combines the elements of the soil, the climate, and the elements of experience.
Silver Thread wines are produced in small batches, with thought and care of the winemakers being placed in each bottle.
